Darmstadt, which has held the title of “City of Science” since 1997, is home to a number of scientific institutions and research facilities of national and international importance. At the Technical University, for example, both the world’s first chair and course of study in electrical engineering were founded. The Space Operations Centre (ESOC) of the European Space Agency (ESA) is also located in Darmstadt. Places worth seeing include the Darmstadtium Science and Congress Centre, the Ludwig Church with its distinctive dome and the Mathildenhöhe artists’ colony.
