The city of Mainz dates back to a Roman foundation in the 1st century. With its over 1,000-year-old St. Martin's Cathedral, it has long been an ecclesiastical centre. Kings were crowned here in the High Middle Ages and modern letterpress printing was invented in the 15th century. The capital of Rhineland-Palatinate on the River Rhine has a landing stage for boats, so that round trips on the longest river in Germany can be made from here.

Together with Wiesbaden, the neighbouring capital of Hesse, Mainz forms a double centre with a population of around 500,000. A direct train connection makes Mainz (20 minutes) and Wiesbaden (35 minutes) easily accessible from Groß-Gerau.
